JEAN DESIGNART l PRESS RELEASE

Choi Seungyoon 《TIMELESS: Inflection Point of Time》

JEAN DESIGNART is pleased to present 《TIMELESS: Inflection Point of Time》, a solo exhibition by Choi Seungyoon, from June 7th (Wed) to July 1st (Sat). The artist has been talking about the various opposites of the world through the formative language created by dots, lines, and planes centered on blue and gold on a large canvas. The artist, who has continuously explored two-dimensional abstract paintings, presents the Inflection Point of Time series through this exhibition.

In this exhibition, before the visual representation of an object on the entire screen, the color of the paint, the density of that color, and the texture of the material called paint are displayed in huge two-dimensional works. Rather than drawing concretely through painting, the artist intentionally draws on the screen of the work or expresses the effect that comes out accidentally through the method of handling paint and brush, materials, and canvas. This exhibition provides a way to view paintings by looking at the expression of paints and brush strokes on a large screen, or more precisely, a way to read and understand abstract paintings as content.

As mentioned in the words “Family, religion, region, gender, academic background, etc., we long for our side to form a consensus, and ironically divide to make our side” (from the artist’s note), we live in a paradoxical world. Goes. The artist expresses this paradox through methods of handling paints and brushes, materials, and canvases, instead of concretely portraying them in paintings. The audience can see the expression of paints and brush strokes unfolding on the large screen, with effects drawn intentionally or accidentally appearing on the screen of the work. The point, line, and plane of the artist's abstract painting are that the strength and angle of the brush stroke, and the figurative and abstract are all harmonized and unfolded on the screen, and the relationship between the artist's figurative and abstract is reexamined, which is the point of the artist's abstract painting, in other words, the 'inflection point'. '.

Among the writings written by the artist in holding this exhibition, there are the following lines. “It doesn't mean that I can't stop my time to save the world. I can only let the time of my world pass.” (From the artist's note) This one word applies not only to the artist's attitude toward production but also to the audience, that is, to those who see his abstract painting work.

In this exhibition, the meaning of the inflection point contained in the work can change and change at any time from the gaze of the artist or the audience, and this will provide an opportunity for us to think about what it is like to see an abstract painting.

Choi Seungyoon (b.1984)

Choi Seung-yoon has continuously explored two-dimensional abstract painting, and not only shows the expression of paint and brush strokes on a large screen but also talks about how to read and understand abstract painting as content. Blue is mainly used. Blue is generally cold, but the hottest star in the universe is blue, and the hottest part of a flame is also blue. In addition, the artist sometimes uses various colors to complete the screen and uses car wipers, window wipers, spatulas, plastic buckets, etc. rather than brushes to make viewers feel infinite dynamism and energy.
